Spartan Shorts: Men – Coach Gerad Good's side (4-9 overall, 3-4 conference) takes a three-game win streak on the road. It continued in heart-stopping fashion Jan. 11, as senior guard Tyler Alexander (Indianapolis, Ind.) hit a conventional three-point play, and sophomore guard/forward Evan Romie (Anna, Ohio) hit one of two free throws in the final four seconds to send the Spartans past Bluffton University 67-65 … Alexander and sophomore guard Adrian Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) each finished in the 20-or-more points range with Alexander ending with 21 to go with eight rebounds, and Johnson collecting 20 and two steals. Senior guard Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.), coming off a career eight three-point, 24-point compilation in a weekend win over Rose-Hulman Jan. 7, wound up with 11 points … Alexander, averaging 21.5 points per game over his last four outings, has seen his season scoring average leap two points (15-17) in the span. Johnson has been impressive in a similar vein, averaging over 16 per contest in his last three appearances. Along other individual trends, freshman guard Erik Bell (Evansville, Ind.) has dished out better than six assists a game over his last four played and has also been credited with at least one in 12 straight … Due to those statistics, the Spartans have climbed into a tie for fifth on the loop standings. They have two statistical categories ranked among the HCAC's top five, as Alexander's 59.8 percent field goal conversion is fourth, and Johnson's 1.7 steals per game are second.
Women – MU (4-10 overall, 3-4 HCAC) stands seventh but is just a game out of a tie for fifth between Defiance College and Franklin College going into the weekend … The Spartans have one statistical section mentioned on the league's top five, as freshman guard Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is fourth in free throw accuracy (84.4). Senior guard Jenifer Lee (Rockville, Ind.) (sixth – three-point field goal percentage – 34.7) and junior forward/center Torrie Christlieb (Culver, Ind.) (seventh – blocked shots - .9 per game) are just off the pace … Coach Josh Dzurick's team opened a home-and-away week with a 57-29 loss at the hands of co-loop-leading Bluffton University. The upperclasswoman duo of Christlieb and Lee combined for 15 of the Black and Gold's total. Christlieb was close to double-double range with eight points and 12 rebounds to go along with two blocked shots. Lee ended the evening with seven points, two rebounds and an assist … Christlieb's been a tough puzzle to solve in the paint of late. Over her last five appearances, she's averaging more than five rebounds and has compiled four of her 12 blocks of opponent's shot attempts.
