Defiance, GVSU next stops for Spartans

Manchester University winds up its pre-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships' schedule Friday, Feb. 10.

Meet details: The Spartans' men's and women's teams are among the fields at Defiance College's Dick Small Invitational. Action is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m. inside the George M. Smart Athletic Center on DC's campus … Senior distance runners Mariah Jordan (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Tiffany Harber (Columbia City, Ind.), Blake Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Thomas Dean (Bremen, Ind.) are competing at the Grand Valley State University of Michigan Big Meet Friday section. Each member of the quartet is scheduled to run in the 5000 meters inside the Kelly Family Sports Center on GVSU's campus.

Spartan Shorts: Coach Brian Cashdollar's squads have already met HCAC qualifying standards in 14 women's and 11 men's events. The Black and Gold's women's team tops the league performance list in the distance medley relay; the 800, mile and 3000 meters (Jordan); and the 5000 meters (Emily Ewen, fr., Wolcott, Ind.) while registering the second-best marks in the 60-meter dash (Dasia Beck, so., Indianapolis, Ind.); the pole vault (Paige Keller, jr., Greenville, Ohio); and the 20-pound weight throw (Shay Aator, sr., West Lafayette, Ind.). Senior distance runner Alex Gudeman (Rochester, Ind.) headlines the men's listings with the top time in the 3000 meters, while freshman jumps specialist Austin Roberts (Indianapolis, Ind.) has the third-best long jump distance … On the NCAA Division III performance rankings, Aator, sitting 25th in the 20-pound weight throw, and the women's distance medley relay, standing 28th, top the program's efforts … Gudeman, going into the weekend, has been on a roll of late gaining individual event championships in back-to-back weekends. He won the 3000 meters at Trine University's Keith Turner Alumni Invitational late last month and added a first-place finish at last weekend's Anderson University Raven Invitational. Jordan has done the same for the women's team in each of this season's three meets claiming the 3000 at the Rose-Hulman Duals, winning the mile at Trine, and finishing first in the mile and 800 meters at AU. Keller has a string of two straight meets with individual championships, as she was first in the pole vault at Trine and Anderson.

2017 HCAC Championships: Rose-Hulman's Fieldhouse in Terre Haute, Ind., is the host venue Saturday, Feb. 18.
