OAC set continues on road

A hectic stretch for the Manchester University baseball team is scheduled to continue Tuesday and Wednesday, March 21 and 22.

Game details: The Spartans (2-7), winners of two of their last four, travel to Heidelberg University to finish a three-game set against the Student Princes Tuesday at HU's Patriots Park at Peaceful Valley. First pitch is 4 p.m. The following afternoon, they wrap up four in a row against the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 4 p.m. start at Otterbein University's Fishbaugh Field … Live video and stats are available for the Heidelberg series finale and live statistics can be viewed for the Otterbein contest via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics.

Spartan Shorts: After a four-game span in which they outscored 61-11 to start the 2017 campaign, Coach Rick Espeset's team has a run of five straight contests in which final outcomes have been decided by four-runs-or-less. Even with a 2-3 record in the quintet, the pitching staff earned run average has been a respectable 3.13 after a large 10.59 mark through the first four outings. The senior duo of first baseman Tailur Szarenski (Bluffton, Ind.) and outfielder Chad Schultz (Fair Oaks, Ind.) has propelled the offense in the period, as they each have eight hits and have combined for six doubles and three RBI. Szarenski, with a .421 batting average during the set, and Schultz, hitting .381 over the last five, have been able to resume on-base (Szarenski -10 in a row dating back to final game of 2016) and hitting streaks (Schultz – seven straight), too … Manchester University, leading off a run of seven games in six days, split with perennial OAC standout Heidelberg University at Gratz Field March 19.  Junior designated hitter Alec Trzeciak (Charlotte, Mich.) hit a bullet to left center field that split the Student Princes' left and center fielders in pursuit and chased home junior pinch-runner Chad Champion, Jr. (Fayette, Ind.), with the game-winning run in the Black and Gold's final at-bat to fuel a 4-3 nightcap win. Four Spartans turned in multiple-hit efforts to help lead the way. Schultz drilled a pair of doubles and scored twice; Szarenski tallied two hits and drove in two runs; junior outfielder Eric Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) had a pair of hits and scored a run; and freshman catcher Joe Gallatin (Muncie, Ind.) finished with two hits and an RBI as part of a 10-hit team attack. Senior hurler Corey Ferguson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) benefitted from the outburst, allowing just one hit and one earned run over three frames while striking out two to gain the win. The opener ended just out of reach. Sophomore outfielder Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind.) singled in two runs to top the offense, but Heidelberg took advantage of six home team errors in route to the 8-4 decision. On the mound, the bullpen trio of freshman Craig Overpeck (Rockville, Ind.), senior Joey Covington (Muncie, Ind.) and senior Mason Neuman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) highlighted the effort, as they weren't touched for an earned run and surrendered only four hits over the final three innings to keep the Spartans close.

2017 HCAC Opener: Mt. St. Joseph University visits Gratz Field for a weekend set Friday and Saturday, March 24 and 25.
