GREENCASTLE, IND. – Senior Alex Gudeman (Rochester, Ind.) made the most of his first 2017 attempt at the 3000 meter steeplechase Saturday, April 15.
His time of 9:45.99 out-distanced an 18-runner field by nearly eight full seconds to put him at the top of the podium for Manchester University. The mark's accolades didn't end there, though, as it was also the fastest clocking in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference to date and also put him within the NCAA Division III national performance list top 100 and just 16 slots shy of the fastest 50.
Gudeman, who helped bolster a 42-point team total for the Spartans at the Indiana Division III Championships with the individual championship at DePauw University's Blackstock Stadium, was joined by sophomore sprinter Austin Coughlin (Fairland, Ind.) and fellow senior distance runner Blake Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) in top three finishes. Harris was a runner-up in the 5000 meters (16:13.39), and Coughlin crossed third in the 100 meter dash (10.92 seconds), a time which is tied for the third-quickest in the HCAC.
Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Brian Cashdollar's squad gets another opportunity to increase efforts on the league list Saturday, April 22. They're part of the field at Ohio Northern University's outdoor Polar Bear Invitational.
