FT. MEYERS, FLA. – A doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe UW-Superior has spotlighted the first two days of Manchester University's Florida spring break trip Sunday and Monday, March 19 and 20.
Heroines were numerous, as the Spartans moved to 3-8-1 with a 4-2 and 8-1 broom job of the Yellowjackets. Sophomore infielder Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) hammered a pair of home runs, one of which was a grand slam, as part of a six-RBI effort in the nightcap. Junior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) and freshman designated player Shakira Perez (Elkhart, Ind.) each tallied two hits in the opener and also drove in a run apiece. Those numbers helped lead junior pitchers Mallorie Jennings (Bourbon, Ind.) and Madisyn Walter (Hanna, Ind.) to victories, as Jennings didn't give up an earned run and was nicked for only two hits in game one, and Walter struck out three and was tagged for just one run on three hits in game two.
Walter's victory moved her mark to 2-3 overall and 2-0 on the trip, as she was the winning hurler in a 10-0, five inning victory over Crown College of Minnesota March 19. Ladwig helped power the offense with a walk, single and triple to go with three runs scored. Manchester University just missed being perfect through two Sunshine State days, as North Central College of Illinois held them off 6-5 in eight innings in Sunday's first contest. Ladwig hammered three hits, including a pair of doubles, and scored three times to guide the Black and Gold.
Manchester University resumes its Fort Myers tour Tuesday, March 21, taking on North Central College of Illinois and Crown College of Minnesota at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
