Balanced attack not enough for MU

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Junior forward/center Beth Schaefer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) registered her second collegiate double-double, leading three Manchester University players that finished in double-digit scoring Tuesday, Nov. 28.

Despite her 12-point, 12-rebound effort over 40 minutes on the Stan Weller Court honoring Coaches Hoffman and Wolfe at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena, it wasn't enough to overcome a rough shooting night, as Kalamazoo College captured a 64-52 victory. A 15-4 run over the final 7:34 of the first half gave the Hornets a 27-18 halftime advantage they didn't relinquish. Kalamazoo grew the lead out to as large as 19 in the second half, while the Spartans converted at less than 35 percent from the field, just 50 percent from the free throw line and drained only three of 24 three-point attempts.

Coach Josh Dzurick's crew, dipping to 1-3, had sophomore guard Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind.) lead the offense with 15 points to go with five assists, also a squad best. Freshman guard Mikalia Taylor (Connersville, Ind.) rounded out the double-figure parade for the Black and Gold, tallying 12 points to go along with two steals.

Manchester University begins 2017-18 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday, Dec. 2. They join the men's program for a doubleheader at Mt. St. Joseph University's Harrington Center. Tip-off is 3 p.m.
