Wilson title spotlights MidStates Invitational

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Building momentum is just what any coach wants to see in early February.

Senior 174-pounder Tristan Wilson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) continued that theme, winding up a 4-0 week with three decisions that led to an individual championship at the 2018 MidStates Invitational Saturday, Feb. 10. He began his day blanking Hunter Stoffer of Otterbein University 3-0 and then slipped past fellow Cardinal Bryce Hessler 3-2 to reach the final. For the second time in five days, he faced off against Trine University's Nick Miller, and, just like a 4-2 victory Feb. 6, a third period takedown was the difference again, as Wilson picked up a 3-2 victory.

He was one of three Spartans to reach the championship round for Coach Kevin Lake's squad, part of a fourth-place team finish. Junior 133-pounder Ben Cauffman was stopped by Wabash College's Chris Diaz due to medical forfeit in the second period, and sophomore 149-pounder Jordan Napier (Indianapolis, Ind.) couldn't overcome a big first period by Ohio Northern University's Jeff Andrews in a 12-4 loss.

Wabash left Stauffer-Wolfe Arena with four individual champions in route to 330 team points for the top spot. Olivet College of Michigan and Adrian College of Michigan just ahead of MU with 194 and 146 points, while the Spartans totaled 135.5.

Manchester University breaks from competition next week to train ahead of the 2018 NCAA Division III Central Region Championships Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23 and 24.
