NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Sparked by straight-set singles' wins from junior Stratton Smith (New Palestine, Ind.), sophomores Spencer Thomas (Yorktown, Ind.) and Isaac Collis (Alexandria, Ind.) and freshman Connor Eichenauer (North Manchester, Ind.), Manchester University closed its 2015-16 home schedule on a high note Friday, April 29.
Smith, at No. 1, and Eichenauer, at No. 4, each rolled to 6-0, 6-0 victories with Collis claiming a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3 and Thomas holding off a stubborn attempt from Mt. St. Joseph University's Ian Stutz at No. 2 7-5, 7-6. MU, moving to 2-10 overall and 2-5 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 9-0 team final, was just as strong in doubles, as Smith and Thomas were 8-3 winners in the top spot, and Collis and Eichenauer teamed up for an 8-2 finish in the second slot. The remaining team points for the Black and Gold came via forfeits for sophomore Garrett Bear (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior Tyler Klein (Cambridge City, Ind.) at number five and six singles and at number three doubles.
Manchester University, moving into a tie for sixth with Defiance College, closes the regular season Monday, May 2, traveling to Anderson University. First serve is 4:00 p.m.
NOTES: Smith and Thomas picked up their team-leading fourth doubles win of the year, stopping MSJ's Connor Wade and Stutz 8-3 … Bear, Eichenauer and Collis each earned their third singles wins of the season.
