ANGOLA, Ind. – The Manchester Spartans opened the 2020 indoor track & field season with a pair of strong team performances at the Sean Brady/Keith Turner Alumni Open hosted by Trine University.
The women tallied 109 points on Saturday, good enough for a second-place overall finish. The men's side collected 63 points and placed fourth.
Emily Ewen (Wolcott, Ind./Tri-County) led the Black and Gold with a first-place finish in the 5000 meters with a top time of 19:48.06. Ana Acevedo (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) added a third-place finish in the mile run with a time of 5:25.58.
The MU women had several strong performances in the field events on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Kendal Garringer (Portland, Ind./Jay County) placed second in the triple jump (8.90 meters) and third in the high jump (1.47 meters). Garringer's markin the high jump was tied for eighth best in school history.
Erica Mohr (Payne, Ohio/Wayne Trace) added a runner-up finish in the weight throw with a distance of 12.55 meters, a new personal record. Tara Conley (Culver, Ind./Knox) finished right behind Mohr in the weight throw with a distance of12.50 meters.
Meagan Trimpey (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green)added a third-place finish in the pole vault, clearing a height of 2.75 (9' 0.25").
The men were led by pair of event wins. Brian Hochstetler (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) led the shot put field with a top distance of 14.19 meters (46' 6.75"). Hochstetler's distance was the fifth best mark in the shot put in school history.
Justin Meredith (Franklin, Ind./Southwestern) added a third-place finish in triple jump with a distance of 12.38 meters (40' 4.75"".
Manchester will travel to Rose-Hulman on Friday January 17 for the "Friday Night Spikes" meet. Friday's meet will begin at 5 p.m.
