Spartans compete at Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Senior 157-pounder Chuck Holmquest (Plymouth, Ind.) topped the individual efforts for Manchester University at the 34th annual Midwest Classic Saturday, Dec. 15.

Holmquest narrowly missed moving into the place-winning matches for Coach Matt Burlingame's squad. He rebounded from a 14-1 loss to Division II Bryce Lumzy of Upper Iowa University to score a 10-1 major decision over Trine's Nick Leonhard and a 6-2 victory over Luke Dunn of Lincoln College. James Bennett of Indiana Tech, toppled by the top seed in the championship side of the bracket, stopped his march with a 7-2 decision.

Sophomore 133-pounder Kalib Jackson (Rome City, Ind.) and freshman 184-pounder Zach Kurtz (Bristol, Ind.) also picked up wins during the day. Jackson won his first match on the championship side before being sidelined by back-to-back losses, while Kurtz rallied for a win after a loss in his opening match before ending 1-2. Senior heavyweight Jimmie King (Muncie, Ind.) had close calls in both of his bouts, falling 6-1 in the opener and 3-1 in overtime his second time out.

Manchester University breaks from competition until it hosts its annual Spartan Mat Classic Saturday, Jan. 12.
