NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester University Men's and Women's Tennis teams hosted the visiting Scots of Alma College at the MU Tennis Courts on Sunday.
The Men fell 0-9 in the team score, but had great battles at the top of the lineup. Austin Arnold (Coatesville, Ind., South Putnam) and Brennan Beachy (Goshen, Ind., Westview) kept pace with the Scots but ultimately fell 5-8 at the first flight. In singles play, Arnold dropped a tough 3-6. 3-6 decision at 1 singles.
The Women's match was a closer affair, coming down to the last singles match of the day. The Spartans started strong as they took a 3-0 team lead after claiming all three doubles matches. Evelyn Minton (Clarksville, Ind., Jeffersonville) and Eva Bazzoni (Wabash, Ind., Manchester) fought from a 1-7 deficit to win the match in a tiebreak with a score of 8-7 (6). The 2 doubles team of Anna Hollingsworth (New Castle, Ind., Blue River Valley)and Ella Knight (Leesburg, Ind., Kalamazoo) won their match 8-6, while the third team of Natalie Kotlin (Lowell, Ind., Lowell) and Courtney Trusty (North Judson, Ind., North Judson) also fought back to take their match in a tiebreak with a score of 8-7 (4).
In singles play, Knight won her 1 singles match 7-5, 6-4 in a tight contest. The Scots would sweep the rest of the singles points, securing a 5-4 team win. Bazzoni at 2 singles and Minton 3 singles both fought hard, but ultimately fell in match tiebreaks. Bazzoni fell 6-4, 3-6, [7-10], while Minton dropped her decision 4-6, 6-3, [5-10].
Both the Men and Women will next be in action as they host Bethel on Wednesday, September 21st, at the MU Tennis Courts. The matches are slated to start at 4 pm.
