Box Score 3 Indianapolis, Ind. - The Manchester University Baseball team faced off with the Depauw Tigers this past weekend in a non-HCAC contest at Bishop Chatard High School.
The Spartans won the series two games to one and improved to 5-5 on the season.
Game 1 Manchester 7, Depauw 12
The Spartan's bats were strong against DePauw University on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as Spring 2025 Manchester Spartan fell 12-7. DePauw University collected 16 hits, while Spring 2025 Manchester Spartan had nine. DePauw University got on the board in the top of the first inning to take the lead, however
Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind., Monroe Central) hit a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the third to narrow the deficit.
Rocco Hanes (Ossian, Ind., Norwell) started the game for Spring 2025 Manchester Spartan. The right-handed pitcher allowed five hits and five runs over four innings, striking out four and walking eight.Â
The Spartans accumulated nine hits in the game.
Cam Bortone (South Bend, Ind,, Mishawaka Marian),
Donavin Massing (Fort Wayne, Ind,, Leo),
Vian Mariani (South Bend, Ind., John Adams), and
Michael Dierckman (Fort Wayne, Ind., Carroll) each collected two hits on the day. Mariani and
Alex Westfield (Rockledge, FL, Viera) were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for the Black & Gold. The Spartans were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error.
Gavin Gleason (Brookston, Ind., Delphi Community) had the most chances in the field with eight.
Game 2 Manchester 9, Depauw 7
Rocco Hanes drove in four runs on two hits to lead the Spartans past DePauw University 9-7 on Sunday. Hanes hit a home run to left field in the ninth inning, scoring three runs, and doubled in the seventh inning, scoring one.
Both offenses were strong at the plate as Manchester collected 15 hits and DePauw University 16 in the high-scoring affair. Manchester got on the board in the top of the first inning after
Gavin Gleason homered to left field to lead off the game, and
Cam Bortone singled down the left field line, each scoring one run.
DePauw University took the lead, 4-2, but the Spartans tied the game in the top of the fourth thanks to an error, and a double by
Joel Kennedy.
A single by Straub gave DePauw University the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the fourth. Manchester tied the game in the top of the seventh thanks to a ground out by
Alex Westfield, and a double by Hanes.
A single by Murray gave DePauw University the lead, 7-6, in the bottom of the seventh. The Black & Gold took the lead in the top of the ninth after a Hanes homer to left field, scoring three runs, and helping secure a victory.
Ty Layson (Fort Wayne, Ind., Homestead) led things off on the mound for the Spartans. The pitcher surrendered 10 hits and five runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out five and walking one.Â
Quinton Black (Noblesville, Ind., Noblesville) threw one inning of zero-run ball for Manchester in relief. The right-handed pitcher allowed one hit, striking out three and walking one.
The Spartans piled up 15 hits in the game.
Max Horner (Goshen, Ind., Northridge), Kennedy, and Westfield each collected three hits for Manchester. Gleason collected two hits in five at bats.
Game 3 Manchester 12, Depauw 6
Clay Pickett (Fort Wayne, Ind., Blackhawk Christian) collected four hits in six at bats, as the Spartans defeated DePauw University 12-6 on Sunday. Pickett hit a home run to left field in the sixth inning, doubled in the ninth inning, singled in the fifth inning, and singled in the eighth inning.
Manchester jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after
Joel Kennedy doubled, scoring two runs, and
Rocco Hanes singled, scoring one run. Three more Spartan runs crossed the plate in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 9-3. Hanes singled, scoring one run, and Pickett homered to left field, scoring two runs.
Jared Holley (Wabash, Ind., Wabash) started the game for Spring 2025 Manchester Spartan. The right-handed pitcher allowed six hits and five runs (four earned) over six innings, striking out four and walking four.
Jackson Todor appeared in relief for Manchester.
Spring 2025 Manchester Spartan tallied 20 hits in the game. Hanes and Pickett were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected four hits for Manchester while hitting back-to-back. Kennedy drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Spartans with three runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 3-for-6 on the day.
Max Horner,
Gavin Gleason, and
Vian Mariani each collected multiple hits and the Spartans ran wild on the base paths, tallying three stolen bases for the game. Manchester defense turned two double plays in the game.
