CINCINNATI, OH — Manchester lost its match to Mt. St. Joseph 3-0 on Saturday, with set scores of 22-25, 25-27, 21-25. Manchester's closest push came in the second set, when it cut an eight-point deficit to 21-19 before falling 27-25.
Manchester's clearest pushes came when it had to work back from deficits. In the opening set, Manchester cut a five-point gap to two at 19-17, and it made a larger comeback push in the second set after falling behind 15-7, trimming that margin to 21-19. Those stretches gave Manchester chances to stay close, but Mt. St. Joseph finished with advantages in attacking and floor defense.
Manchester totaled 40 kills on a .167 hitting percentage, while Mt. St. Joseph had 45 kills and hit .269. Both teams finished with seven total blocks and three service aces, and Manchester committed fewer service errors, 4-8, but Mt. St. Joseph held a 45-38 edge in digs.
Alicia Simmons led Manchester's attack with 15 kills and 15.5 points, while
Morgan Howard added 26 assists, nine kills, one solo block and two block assists.
Tiffany Watterson finished with 11 digs and two aces.
Manchester worked back from a late 19-14 deficit to tie the first set at 20-20, using kills from
Aubrey Hreha,
Lily Lichtenbarger and Simmons before
Morgan Howard's block and Simmons' kill brought the set level. Earlier, Mt. St. Joseph opened with the first three points, but Simmons answered with four kills across Manchester's first five points, and Howard's service ace helped pull Manchester within 5-4. The set stayed just out of reach through the middle as Manchester got a Lichtenbarger kill and a
Kyana Martinez-
Delaeni Hixson block to stay within three at 15-12, then faced an 18-13 gap. After Manchester drew even at 20-20, Howard put down a kill and Martinez and Hixson combined on another block to keep the set within one, but Mt. St. Joseph closed out the set 25-22.
Manchester pushed back from a 15-7 deficit in the second set, getting as close as 21-19 and later tying the set at 24-24 and 25-25 before Mt. St. Joseph scored the final two points for a 27-25 set. Earlier, Manchester answered an opening 2-0 hole with points from Howard and a block by Simmons and Hixson, then moved ahead 4-3 on another Mt. St. Joseph attack error. Mt. St. Joseph built separation through the middle of the set, but Howard, Lichtenbarger and Martinez helped Manchester keep working back into the set. Watterson added a service ace during a three-point Manchester stretch that cut the deficit to 21-19, and late kills from Simmons, including one from
Ava Heady to tie it at 24-24 and another to make it 25-25, kept Manchester even until the closing points.
Manchester was within 14-13 in the third set after Martinez put down a kill from Howard, but Mt. St. Joseph scored the next five points to create the separation Manchester had to chase. Earlier, Manchester opened with a Lichtenbarger kill from Howard and an opponent error for a 2-0 start, then later used a Hixson kill, a Mt. St. Joseph bad set and a Simmons kill to move ahead 9-6. After Mt. St. Joseph answered to go in front, Simmons and
Izzy Renz delivered kills and Watterson added a service ace to bring Manchester back to 12-12. Heady assisted kills by Lichtenbarger and Howard during the late push, and Manchester fought off three set points with a Mt. St. Joseph service error and kills from Martinez and Simmons before Mt. St. Joseph closed the set 25-21.

Levi Campbell touchdown wiped out by offensive pass interference, and Bluffton carried a 34-13 lead into the fourth quarter.
Bluffton opened the fourth quarter with a 15-play, 55-yard drive, but Manchester's defense held after the visitors reached the Manchester 15, with Garner hurrying a third-down incompletion before a 39-yard field goal made it 37-13 with 8:30 left.
