Coach Eric Christiansen's Spartans received a win at number four singles from senior Alli Heeter (Napanee, Ind.). Running her record to 8-0, Heeter took a 7-5, 6-0 win. The Black and Gold nearly made it even tougher on their hosts, with junior Kara Gilley (Plymouth, Ind.) falling in a 10-7 superbreaker at number one, junior Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind.) pushing the Engineers' Melissa Montgomery to a tiebreaker in the first set and a 6-4 final in the second set, and senior Alyssa Dibley (Elkhart, Ind.) taking her opponent to a 7-5 final in the second set at number five.
Doubles' play was just as nip-and-tuck. Gilley and Leeper battled RH's duo of Montgomery and Marie Stettler to a 9-8 final that included a 7-4 tiebreaker at number one. Dibley and junior Amanda Keating (Lafayette, Ind.) took their opposition to an 8-6 final at number three.
The Black and Gold travel to Bethel College of Indiana Thursday, Oct. 11 for a non-conference dual. Two days later, the 2012 HCAC Championships begin in Indianapolis.
