Box Score 2 NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. - A little bit of history occurred for Manchester University during day one of its home invitational Friday, Sept. 12.
While the a 25-20, 25-18, 25-10 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Albion College helped the Spartans crack the win column for the first time this season, it also have first-year head coach Bryndon Paulsen his first victory as a head coach.
MU's offense sparked the sweep of the Britons. The team hit a glittering .360 attack percentage led by sophomore outside hitter Courtney Chowning's impressive line of 12 kills and just one error in 26 attempts for a .423 attack percentage. Chowning also topped the team with two service aces and nine digs, while her fellow front line mates, junior middle hitters Devin Clark (Madison, Ind.) and Morgan Pavelka (Noblesville, Ind.) combined for a stone wall defense of seven blocks to add to the Yorktown, Ind. native's totals.
The Spartans just missed making it a 2-0 day, battling North Coast Athletic Conference member Denison University to a four-set finish (15-25, 25-23, 26-28, 21-25). Junior outside hitter Sarah Pruden (Noblesville, Ind.) and Chowning finished with 14 kills each, and Pavelka had a strong match with 10 kills, three service aces, three solo blocks and one block assist.
MU continues play in its home invitational Saturday, Sept. 13. They face Ohio Wesleyan at 1 p.m. and Wilmington College of Ohio at 3 p.m.
