Strong effort leads MU to home-opening victory

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University pushed its overall mark above .500 and remained unbeaten in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Wednesday, Sept. 17.

The Spartans (2-1 overall, 2-0 HCAC) gained straight-set singles wins at all five slots and swept through doubles play to blank visiting Defiance College of Ohio 9-0. MU dropped just six games in singles' play and eight overall in front of its home crowd.

Freshman Katy Ashpole (Leesburg, Ind.), sophomore Alaina Beckner (Columbia City, Ind.), junior Megan Buckner (Muncie, Ind.) and freshman Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.) joined sophomore Adriana Brown (Columbia City, Ind.) atop the singles' win leaders' list each picking up their second decision. Ashpole and Cordill took over the lead on the doubles' ladder, gaining their second victory by knocking off the Yelowjackets' Nicole Tank and Haley Kuhlman 8-2 at number one.

The Black and Gold continue a three-dual slate this week traveling to the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind., for a double-dual with the men's team. First serve is 3 p.m.
