Spartans battle Adrian in non-league duals

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Freshman women's player Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.) kept up her winning ways in singles and doubles Tuesday, Sept. 23, highlighting a home men's and women's double dual.

Cordill, improving to 5-1 in singles play behind her fifth successive win, swept past Adrian College of Michigan's Kylee Bezeau 6-1, 6-1 for the Black and Gold's lone singles' decision. She joined fellow freshman Katy Ashpole (Leesburg, Ind.) to capture an 8-2 victory at the number one slot, while junior Megan Buckner (Muncie, Ind.) joined freshman Katie Peden (North Manchester, Ind.) to win at number two.

MU (3-3) nearly managed to overcome Adrian's two-through-five singles sweep that keyed the visitors to the 5-3 team decision. Ashpole battle back from a 7-5 heartbreaker in the first set at number two against Arielle Williams, winning 6-2 in the second set before Williams won the match with a 6-3 third set final. The number three doubles' duo of freshman Alisha Paddock (Alexandria, Ind.) and sophomore Alaina Beckner (Columbia City, Ind.) battled to an 8-6 loss.

MU's men closed their fall campaign at 0-3 after a 9-0 loss to the Bulldogs. The senior-sophomore doubles' tandem of Kyle Lahman (North Manchester, Ind.) and Stratton Smith (New Palestine, Ind.) picked up four games at number one, falling 8-4, while junior Matt Buncich (Goshen, Ind.) gained the same number in the first set at the six singles' spot.

The Spartans' women's squad returns to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference dual play Saturday, Sept. 27. Hanover College visits MU's outdoor courts for an 11 a.m. start.
