Box Score DEFIANCE, OHIO – It was another strong evening for the middle hitting combination of freshman Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) and senior Morgan Pavelka (Noblesville, Ind.) Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Tevis hammered 12 kills and hit at a .258 clip, while Pavelka chipped in eight kills and ended with a .200 attack percentage. Despite their evenings inside Defiance College's Karl H. Weaner Center, the host Yellow Jackets amassed a .485 hitting percentage of their own in the fourth set and held on in the fifth to capture a 18-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-8 and 15-10 decision.
Junior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) added more pluses for the Spartans' offense, compiling her seventh double-double of 13 kills and 19 digs. Other leading numbers came from Pavelka (three service aces); Tevis (two block assists); and freshman setter Dakota Stanichuk (Troy, Mich.) (43 assists).
Defiance (7-16 overall, 2-2 HCAC), moving past the Black and Gold (7-14 overall, 2-4 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) into a tie for fifth with Mt. St. Joseph on the league standings, received a combined 27 kills from the duo of Marissa Windau and Meredith Shank.
MU resumes a brief two-match road trip with a key late-season clash at Mt. St. Joseph of Ohio Saturday, Oct. 17. First serve is 1 p.m.
NOTES: Tevis continued a roll of four successive .200 or higher attack percentage matches. She's averaging nearly nine kills and has compiled seven blocks, two of them stuffs, in the stretch … Chowning, registering her 11th double-figure kill outing, moved over 200 kills for a third straight season … Pavelka has been a model of consistency for the squad this season, hitting above .200 in 16 of 21 matches and compiling multiple service aces 10 times.
