Spartans wrap up HCAC tourney berth

CINCINNATI, OHIO – Three wins in the five singles' matches aided Manchester University in a 6-3 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference dual win over Mt. St. Joseph University Friday, April 24.

Sophomore Stratton Smith (New Palestine, Ind.) remained on a torrid streak, winning his fourth straight singles' decision and teaming up with senior doubles partner Kyle Lahman (North Manchester, Ind.) for their fourth successive victory. Freshman Spencer Thomas (Yorktown, Ind.) also had a big evening at MSJ's outdoor courts, rallying in a superbreaker for a three-set win at number four singles and joining fellow freshman Garrett Bear (Indianapolis, Ind.) to claim a number two doubles victory.

MU's third dual decision in its last five outings moved them to 4-8 overall and 3-4 in the conference. It also cinched the program's first postseason conference tournament berth since 2010.

The Black and Gold close the regular season, Tuesday, April 28, hosting league opponent Earlham College. First serve is set for 4 p.m. at MU's outdoor courts.

NOTES: Thomas' combined doubles record increased to 7-5. He and Bear remained undefeated (3-0) … Smith's singles victory moved him two wins shy (5-7) of the .500 mark.
