Box Score 4 CHICAGO, ILL. – Spurred on by a pair of plus .245 team attack percentage marks, Manchester University moved their current win streak to four with two victories during day one of the 2015 North Park University Viking Clash Friday, Sept. 11.
The Spartans, improving to 4-3, stopped North Central College of Illinois and Alverno College of Wisconsin in four sets each to be one of two tourney unbeatens going into Saturday, Sept. 12, action. Individual stars were many for Coach Bryndon Paulsen's squad inside Helwig Arena on NPU's campus.
In the decision against the previously 7-0 Cardinals of Naperville, Ill., to begin the afternoon, junior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) continued her scintillating 2015 start with 21 kills, a .327 attack percentage, three service aces and 10 digs. The middle hitter duo of senior Morgan Pavelka (Noblesville, Ind.) and freshman Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) was just as tough of a puzzle for NCC's defense to solve, as they each tallied 10 kills and were well above .350 individual attack percentages.
MU closed their first day rallying from a 25-23 first set loss to Alverno with 25-9, 25-12, 25-16 outcomes in the final three sets. Chowning was again at the offensive forefront with 11 kills to go with two service aces and 10 digs. Pavelka was next in line on the attack chart (nine kills), while senior outside hitter Sarah Pruden (Noblesville, Ind.) and freshman right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) turned in six kills apiece.
The Black and Gold resume action at NPU taking on fellow tournament unbeaten Nebraska Wesleyan University of Lincoln, Neb., at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and the host Vikings at 3 p.m. EST Saturday.
NOTES: Manchester University's current win skein is its longest since the 2011 squad registered five straight in September … Chowning's rise to 100-plus kills for the season, reached in just seven matches, bears itself out over her past four appearances. She carries a kills-per-match average of just under 19 (18.5) in the span … Freshman setter Dakota Stanichuk (Troy, Mich.) continues to compile impressive assist numbers, reeling off 30-or-more over the last four matches … Senior right side hitter Tiffany Clark (North Manchester, Ind.) has made life tough on opposing back row defenders, She harbors a current string of five successive outings with multiple service aces.
