Junior Adriana Brown (Columbia City, Ind.) registered a win at number five singles against Rose-Hulman Sunday, Sept. 20, highlighting Manchester University's weekend duals.
Brown, improving to 4-1, upended the Fightin' Engineers Becca Stanley 7-5, 6-3 for the squad's point in an 8-1 loss at MU's outdoor courts. Despite the outcome, Coach Eric Christiansen's team gave their guests all they could handle. Sophomore Katie Peden (North Manchester, Ind.) took the number two singles match to a superbreaker which went to 11-9, while the top doubles' pairing of sophomores Katy Ashpole (Leesburg, Ind.) and Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.) dropped a 9-8 thriller, and the number three doubles' unit of junior Cassy Dibley (Elkhart, Ind.) and freshman Sierra Crane (Bedford, Ind.) gathered seven game wins in a 9-7 defeat.
The Spartans (2-3 overall, 2-2 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) opened the weekend with a 9-0 loss to highly-touted Franklin College at the west Indy Racquet Club Saturday, Sept. 19. Cordill took the first set against the Grizzlies' Melissa Sanders by a 6-4 count before Sanders rallied for the victory with 6-0, 6-0 decisions.
MU returns to dual action Saturday, Sept. 26, with a trip to Hanover College.
