HCAC tourney appearance wraps up in semifinals

WEST INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The senior doubles pairing of Adriana Brown (Columbia City, Ind.) and Alaina Beckner (Columbia City, Ind.) battled to five game wins at the number three slot Saturday, Oct. 15, but regular season champion Hanover College staved off the Spartans' key team point try in route to a 5-0 semifinal round victory at the 2016 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

The Panthers, advancing to the meet finale Sunday, Oct. 16, gained wins at the number one and two doubles matches as well, defeating the tandems of juniors Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.) and Mariam Aly (Giza, Egypt) and juniors Katy Ashpole (Leesburg, Ind.) and Katie Peden (North Manchester, Ind.) 8-2 and 8-3, respectively. Ashpole and Peden dug in during singles play at No. 3 and 4, but Hanover closed out the contest with straight-set decisions.

Coach Eric Christiansen's program's seventh successive conference tourney berth was spotlighted by a 5-2 victory over rival Anderson University Friday, Oct. 14. The Black and Gold (6-7 overall) picked themselves up off the mat after the Ravens won two of three in doubles' action, winning four straight-set single matches. Aly, Brown, Cordill and Peden sealed MU's second dual win of the season against AU.
