ANDERSON, IND. – Fueled by three critical singles' wins and going 2-1 in doubles' action, Manchester University opened a two-match Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference road trip on a high note Thursday, Sept. 15.
Junior Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.) continued to turn in positive results at No. 1 singles, sweeping past the Ravens' Abby Kirkman 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Mariam Aly (Giza, Egypt) rebounded from a 6-4 first loss to Allison Newman and rallied for a three-set victory with 6-0, 6-4 scores. The host side answered with three consecutive straight-set victories from number three through five, but senior Alaina Beckner (Columbia City, Ind.) closed out what Coach Eric Christiansen noted was the program's first victory over its league rivals in several seasons with a retirement win at number six.
Doubles competition at AU's courts was just as nip and tuck. Cordill and Aly were 8-4 winners at number one, while senior Adrianna Brown (Columbia City, Ind.) teamed up with Beckner for an 8-5 decision at number three.
MU, sporting a 2-1 overall and 2-0 league dual mark, clashes with Earlham College Saturday, Sept. 17. First serve is 11 a.m. at EC's tennis courts in Richmond, Ind.
