Spartans Rewrite Record Book at 2020 HCAC Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Manchester University men's and women's swimming & diving teams rewrote the record book with new school records and improved performances at the 2020 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.

Franklin College repeated as HCAC champions in both genders, with the women earning 832.5 points. The Franklin men narrowly edged Rose-Hulman 721-713. The Transylvania women tallied 405 team points for a runner-up finish, while the AU women rounded out the top three with 356.5 team points. The Anderson men registered 215 points to close out the top three slots.

The Manchester women earned 90 points over the three-day event while the men earned 17 points.

Junior Shelby Kell (Morristown, Ind./Eastern Hancock) led strong team performances for the Black & Gold in Terre Haute. Kell set new school records in the 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle, and the 500-yard freestyle. Shelby's time of 2:02.75 earned her an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Kell posted a time of 5:36.63 in the 500-yard freestyle. She added another eight-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle event, finishing with a time of 56.27.

The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kell, Katie Blystone, Jimena Torres, and Maria Wells set a new school record at the HCAC Championships. Their time of 1:45.54 earned them a fifth-place finish on the podium. The same group also placed sixth in the 200-yard medley relay with a final time of 2:02.49.

Kell, Blystone, Wells, and Mackenzie Hoover teamed up for sixth-place finishes in the 400-yard freestyle (3:56.52) and 800-yard freestyle relays (8:41.20).

For the men, senior Christain Poole (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) closed out his Black & Gold career with a pair new school records. Poole placed ninth overall in the 100-yard butterfly with a program-best time of 53.00.  Poole added another school record in 100-freestyle with a time of 47.81. Christain earned a seventh-place finish in the event.

Over the three-day event, Poole added an eighth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a final time of 21.83.
