Women's Basketball Goes 1-1 in Weekend Tournament

NEW WILMINGTON, PA. - The Manchester women's basketball team competed in the "Teammates for Life" Tip-Off tourney hosted by Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. The Spartans played Mount Union College on Saturday, November 12th and Kalamazoo on Sunday, November 13th. 

On Saturday, Manchester dropped the 2022-23 season opener against the Purple Raiders 77-69. 

Mount Union was led by Gretchen Koken who finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Baily Shutsa and Emma Cannon added 15 and 14 points respectively. Following Saturday's win, Mount Union advanced to the championship game to go head-to-head against host Westminster College. 


Ally Graber (Mooresville, Ind., Mooresville) led the Black and Gold with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Fifth-year Bridget Nash (Carmel, Ind., Bishop Chatard) chipped in 13 points while Mia Shields (Arcadia, Ind., Hamilton Heights) added 9 points for the Spartans. As a team, Manchester shot 44.4% from the field and 73.7% (14-19) from the free throw line. 

During Sunday's consolation game against Kalamazoo, Manchester knocked off the Hornets by a final score of 62-32. The biggest stat from Sunday's game was that MU pressured Kalamazoo into committing 33 turnovers. The Spartans were able to capitalize, scoring 29 points off those 33 turnovers. 

The Black and Gold led from the start and didn't look back. First-Year
Jessie Ringen (Rensselaer, Ind., Rensselaer Central) led the Spartans with 13 points and 4 rebounds. Alexis Porter (Knoxville, Tenn., West) also added 10 points for the Black and Gold while Ally Graber (Mooresville, Ind., Mooresville) chipped in 8 points. As a team, Manchester shot 33.8% (22-65) from the field. 

Kalamazoo was led by Sara English with 11 points on the day. Josee Cooke added 8 points and 5 rebounds for the Hornets. As a team, Kalamazoo shot 23.5% from the field and 56.5% from the free throw line. 

For Manchester,  Jessie Ringen  was named to the "Teammates for Life" Tip-Off Tourney All-Tournament Team on Sunday. 

Up next for the Manchester women's basketball team, the Spartans will host Adrian College on Wednesday, November 16th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
