Manchester Picks Up Two Wins in Three-Games Series at Berea

BEREA, Ky.- The Manchester University baseball team finished the weekend 2-1 as they competed at Wyatt Field against Berea College in a non-conference three-game series on March 16-17.

Senior Jared Holley (Wabash, Ind., Wabash) got the Spartans on the board first with an RBI single in the first inning of the opening game on Saturday. Manchester got out to an 8-0 lead by the top of the fourth. The Mountaineers picked up a few runs in the seventh inning. From that point on it was all Spartans, finishing the first game on top 11-4.

Following the first game, Manchester got out to a 6-1 start by the seventh inning in the second game. Berea fought their way back into the game scoring six runs after the seventh. The Spartans tried to come back but their efforts were cut short, falling 7-6.

The following morning Manchester got out to a fast start as senior Austin Knowles (Nassau, Bahamas, Athens Christian (Ga.)) opened the game with a home run. The Spartans continued their scoring efforts getting the score to 7-2 in the fourth inning.

The Mountaineers wouldn't go away without a fight, cutting Manchester's lead by one in the 5th. Manchester responded by scoring a pair of runs in the 7th thanks to an RBI from Gavin Gleason (Brookston, Ind., Delphi Community) and a balk.

The Spartans'  offensive hot streak continued with a Gleason double, 3 RBI, and a two-run home run from Michael Dierckman (Fort Wayne, Ind., Carroll). Manchester finished the game 15-7.

Up next, Manchester's game against Calvin scheduled for Wednesday, March 20 has been canceled. The Spartans will return to action on Saturday, March 23 at Anderson University to open Heartland Collegiate Athletics Conference (HCAC) play.
