NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind.- The Manchester baseball team hosted Hanover College for a three-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) series against the Panthers on April 12-13.
The Spartans finished the weekend 0-3 against the Panthers. Hanover won games one and two in seven innings. Manchester would battle in game three but fall short 5-2.
GAME 1: HANOVER 18, MANCHESTER 3
- An RBI single by Griffin Garwood (Fishers, Ind., Mt. Vernon) put the Spartans on the board in the bottom of the 2nd inning, scoring Michael Dierckman (Fort Wayne, Ind., Carroll).
- The Spartans would score again in the 3rd and 7th innings, but Hanover would outlast Manchester to take game one of the three-game series.
- Four Spartans had extra base hits, including a triple from sophomore Jackson Todor (Fort Wayne, Ind., Homestead).
- Dierckman recorded two stolen bases.
GAME 2: HANOVER 14, MANCHESTER 4
- Vian Mariani (South Bend, Ind., John Adams) hit a single to centerfield, bringing in two runs for the Black and Gold in game two. Mariani finished the game with going 2-3 from the plate with two RBI.
- Rocco Hanes (Ossian, Ind., Norwell) hit a sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning to score Austin Knowles (Nassau, Bahamas, Athens Christian (Ga.)). Hanes would go on to score the Spartans' fourth run of the day in the 6th inning. He would finish game two going 2-3 at the plate in game two, recording two runs and one RBI.
GAME 3: HANOVER 5, MANCHESTER 2
- After Hanover plated a run in the top of the 1st inning, Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind., Monroe Central) tied the game up 1-1 in the bottom of the 1st with an RBI double to right field. Kennedy would finish the game going 2-3 at the plate with a double and hit by a pitch.
- Manchester took the lead 2-1 thanks to a sacrifice fly from Hanes, bringing in Kennedy.
- Hanover tied the game up 2-2 in the 3rd.
- After a few scoreless innings, Hanover retook the lead in the top of the 5th inning off a two-run home run. The Panthers would hang on to win the third and final game of the series.
- Gavin Gleason (Brookston, Ind., Delphi Community) also went 2-3 at the plate in game two with a walk.
- Jared Holley (Wabash, Ind., Wabash) recorded five strikeouts and only allowed seven hits in his 7.2 innings at the mound.
UP NEXT:
- The Spartans (9-19, 3-10 HCAC) will travel to Bluffton, Ohio on Saturday April 20 for a conference doubleheader against the Bluffton University Beavers.
- First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. with game two to follow.
