Manchester Splits HCAC Doubleheader Against Rose-Hulman

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Manchester University softball team hosted Rose Hulman for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader at the MU Softball Field on Sunday, April 14. 

The Spartans split the day with the Fightin' Engineers, winning game one 4-3 in 8 innings. Rose Hulman would take game two 7-4. 

GAME 1: MANCHESTER 4, ROSE-HULMAN 3

  • Rose-Hulman took a 1-0 lead after the first 3 innings of game one.
  • Manchester answered with back-to-back triples from Lexi Goodman (Poplar, Ill., North Boone) and Lizzy Willis (Yorktown, Ind., Yorktown)Goodman would score off the Willis triple to tie the game 1-1. 
  • The Spartans would take the 2-1 lead off a Rose Hulman error, advancing Willis to home.
  • The Fightin' Engineers would fight their way back into the game scoring in the 5th and 6th, making it 3-2.
  • A sacrifice fly ball from Erin Singleton (Brownstown, Ind., Brownstown Central) would tie the game up 3-3 in the bottom of the 6th.
  • Both teams would go scoreless in the 7th inning, leading to extra innings
  • In the bottom of the 8th inning, Alee Eaker (Lowell, Ind., Lowell) singled to left field, bringing in pinch runner Emma Bartlett (Brookston, Ind., Frontier) from second base for the winning run.
  • Kaitlyn Carr (Valparaiso, Ind., Chesterton) was on the mound for all eight innings, only scattering eight hits. The win advances her record to 4-1 this season.
  • As a team, the Spartans had 10 hits in game one. Eaker  was 4-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Goodman went 3-4 at the plate.

GAME 2: ROSE-HULMAN 7, MANCHESTER 4

  • The Fightin' Engineers pulled ahead 6-0 through the first 4 innings of game two.
  • Alee Eaker drove in Sabrina Leonard (Fillmore, Ind., South Putnam) to put the Spartans on the board in the bottom of the 4th inning. 
  • Rose Hulman led 7-2 going into the bottom of the 7th inning.
  • A last-chance effort from the Spartans was cut short after they scored two runs in the final inning, falling 7-4.
  • As a team, the Spartans had 10 hits in game two.
  • Leonard went 4-4 at the plate, recording a double, a triple, and two RBIs.
  • Lizzy Willis  pitched 3.2 innings recording 5 strikeouts 
  • Brionna Egold (Greencastle, Ind., South Putnam) threw 3.1 innings of relief in game two, holding Rose-Hulman to four hits. 

UP NEXT:

  • Manchester returns to the MU Softball Field on Tuesday, April 16 as they host Bluffton University in another HCAC doubleheader. 
  • Action for game one will begin at 3:30 p.m. with game two to follow.
