Spartans Split Non-Conference Doubleheader at Asbury

WILMORE, Ky. - The Manchester Spartans traveled to Kentucky to compete in a doubleheader against Asbury University on Sunday, April 7th.
 
Manchester split the series 1-1 with Asbury. The Spartans took game one 10-2, but the Eagles bounced back with a 6-5 win in game two. 
 
Game 1: MANCHESTER 10, ASBURY 2
  • The Spartans got on the board first with an RBI single to right field from junior Kaitlyn Carr (Valparaiso, Ind., Chesterton), bringing in sophomore Sabrina Leonard (Fillmore, Ind., South Putnam).
  • Leonard went 3-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three doubles.
  • Going into the 7th inning Manchester led Asbury 6-2
  • The Spartans' offensive efficiency would continue as the Black and Gold scored four more runs, and finishing game one on top 10-2.
  • Lexi Goodman (Poplar, Ill. , North Boone ) also went 3-4 at the plate in game one. The sophomore outfielder drove in a team-high three RBIs.
  • Carr pitched a complete 7 innings, only allowing seven hits and striking out five batters. 
 
Game 2: Asbury 6, Manchester 5
  • Asbury jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the end of the 1st inning. 
  • Manchester tied the game up thanks to a sacrifice fly from Sabrina Leonard and an RBI single by Kaitlyn Carr. 
  • The Spartans and Eagles went back and forth in scoring, making it 5-5 after the 4th inning.
  • The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 7th when the Eagles hit a single to left field to drive in a run and take game two by a final score of 6-5.
  • In game two, first-year Crystal Cooke (Richmond, Ky., Madison Southern) went 2-3 at the plate. 
  • Fellow first-year Kendal Rider (Otterbein, Ind., Lafayette Central Catholic) led the team in RBIs (2) and runs scored (2) in game two.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Spartans will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday, April 13 to take on the Lions of Mount St. Joseph in a conference doubleheader.
  • Game one will start at 1:00 p.m., with the second game to follow.
