TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Manchester University Mens Baseball team traveled to Terre Haute, Indiana to take on the Fightin' Engineers of Rose-Hulman in their final regular season doubleheader on Sunday, May 5.
The Spartans split the series, dropping the first game 9-15, but bounced back by winning the second game 7-3
GAME 1: ROSE-HULMAN 15, MANCHESTER 9
- Rose-Hulman came out fighting in the first game, Scoring 10 runs by the third inning.
- The Spartans wouldn't go away without a fight of their own, starting with a sacrifice fly by Gavin Gleason (Brookston, Ind., Delphi Community), bringing in one run, and getting Manchester on the board.
- In the sixth inning, a single to left field from Mitchell Baker (Plainfield, Ind., Plainfield) would bring in two runs and make the score 3-13.
- In the same inning, Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind., Monroe Central) doubled to left field, bringing in Baker and making it 4-13.
- Off a Rose Hulman walk and a sacrifice fly from Vian Mariani (South Bend, Ind., John Adams), the Spartans cut the lead and made it 6-13
- In the seventh inning Kennedy for the second time in the weekend went yard, making the game 8-13.
- Rose Hulman however would respond with two runs of their own, ultimately sealing the game, winning 15-9.
GAME 2: MANCHESTER 7, ROSE-HULMAN 3
- The Spartans got on the board first in the third inning off a pair of singles to center field fromMitchell Baker and Joel Kennedy, making the score 2-0.
- Manchester's offensive would continue to flourish as they would tack on two more runs off hits from Austin Knowles (Nassau, Bahamas, Athens Christian (Ga.)) and Gavin Gleason
- By the seventh inning, the Spartans had built a 7-0 lead over Rose Hulman
- However, the Fightin' Engineers didn't go down without a fight, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
- The Spartans were able to hold them off winning game two 7-3.
- As a team, the Spartans had 14 hits. Jared Holley (Wabash, Ind., Wabash) and Joel Kennedy had 3 hits each, Holley going 3-4 and Kennedy 3-5.
- Jackson Todor (Fort Wayne, Ind., Homestead) pitched seven innings, earning four strikeouts, and scattering only eight hits.
The Spartans conclude their season with a record of 16-24 overall and 9-13 in Conference play.
