Richmond, Ind. - The Manchester University Men's Basketball team traveled to Richmond, Ind. to take on the Quakers of Earlham College in a Saturday HCAC showdown.
Although it being the Earlham Senior Day, Manchester played spoiler and took home the win, taking the game to overtime.
Manchester 93, Earlham 84
A crucial game for Manchester, the Spartans made it known they wanted to win and would go as far as needed to secure that victory. After a back and forth first half, the Quakers would go into the locker rooms leading by 7. Coming out of halftime, Earlham stayed hot and kept a substantial lead over Manchester, leading by 14 with 10 minutes to go. The Spartans would go on a 12-0 run thanks to a couple of huge three pointers from
Ty Lynas (Crawfordsville, Ind., Crawfordsville) and
Clay McCorkle (Converse, Ind, Oak Hill) and force their way back into the game. The Spartans eventually led by 2 with 1:30 to go but Earlham hit a huge tip in with 20 seconds left to force overtime.
All the momemtum however was with the Black and Gold as they started out OT on an 8-0 run and would keep that lead and more for the remainder of the game and win by 9. The Spartan offense exploded for 93 points including 27 from
Bryant Smith (West Lafayette, Ind., Harrison), 20 from
Ty Lynas, 18 from
Clay McCorkle, and 14 from
Zach Sawyer (Columbus, Ohio, Bishop Watterson).
The Spartans look to clinch their spot in the HCAC Tournament on February 19 as they host Franklin College.
