Spartan Baseball Sweeps the Thunder in Shortened Series

North Manchester, Ind. - The Manchester University Baseball team hosted the Trine University Thunder in a shortened weekend series due to the weather.

In what was supposed to be a three-game series, the Spartans ended up finishing only two, however in those two the Spartans put up eight runs in each game and would sweep Trine.

Game 1 Manchester 8, Trine 2

The Manchester Spartans easily dispatched Trine on Friday, 8-2. Rocco Hanes (Ossian, Ind., Norwell) led things off on the bump for the Spartans. The starting pitcher surrendered nine hits and two runs over nine innings, striking out nine and walking one. 

Manchester piled up nine hits in the game.Cam Bortone (South Bend, Ind,, Mishawaka Marian) and Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind., Monroe Central) were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for the Spartans. Max Horner (Goshen, Ind., Northridge) went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Black & Gold in hits. Alex Westfield (Rockledge, FL, Viera) collected two hits for the Spartans in four at bats.

Game 2 Manchester 8, Trine 6

Trine opened the scoring in the top of the second after three home runs, however the Spartans never quit, capturing the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the fifth after Westfield hit a sacrifice fly, Trine committed an error, and Trine's pitcher balked, each scoring one run.

Westfield homered to left field, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the Spartans that would seal the victory. 

Ty Layson (Fort Wayne, Ind., Homestead) started the game for Manchester. The starter surrendered seven hits and five runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking none. Arturo Casas (Pendleton, Ind., Pendleton Heights) appeared in relief for Manchester and picked up the save.

The Spartans tallied 10 hits in the game. Rocco Hanes, Joel Kennedy, and Alex Westfield each collected two hits for the Black and Gold. Manchester stole three bases and turned one double play in the game.
