Spartans Sweep Rose; Extend Win Streak to Four

North Manchester,Ind. - The Manchester University Baseball team hosted Rose Hulman in a cloudy Saturday doiubleheader. The Spartans came away with both wins and improved to 4-2 in HCAC play.


Manchester 12, Rose 9

Gavin Gleason (Brookston, Ind., Delphi Community) drove in five runs on three hits to lead the Spartans past Rose-hulman 12-9 on Saturday. Gleason hit a home run to right field in the fifth inning, scoring three runs, and doubled in the fourth inning, scoring two. Bats blistered as Spring 2025 Manchester Spartan collected 14 hits.

Rose-hulman jumped out to the lead in the top of the second inning after Harms doubled, scoring two runs, Otroszko doubled, scoring two runs, and Rogers lined out, scoring one run. Rose-hulman added one run in the third after Brown singled to center field.

However the Spartans made the score 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth after Gleason doubled, scoring two runs, Max Horner (Goshen, Ind., Northridge) singled, scoring one run, and Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind., Monroe Central) hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.

Four more Manchester Spartan runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 11-6. Mitchell Cobb (Pendleton, Ind., Pendleton Heights) doubled, scoring one run, and Gleason homered to right field, scoring three runs.

Kennedy hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth for the Black & Gold and all but sealed the victory. 

Ty Layson (Fort Wayne, Ind., Homestead) started the game for Manchester. The starter allowed 10 hits and nine runs (seven earned) over six innings, striking out three and walking two. Quinton Black (Noblesville, Ind., Noblesville) tossed three innings of zero-run ball for the Spartans in relief. The hurler allowed four hits, striking out two and walking one.

Manchester accumulated 14 hits in the game. Cobb, Gleason, and Kennedy each collected three hits for Manchester. Horner collected two hits for the Manchester Spartans in five at bats.

Manchester 11, Rose 5

Michael Dierckman (Fort Wayne, Ind., Carroll) collected three hits in four at bats, as the Spartans defeated Rose-hulman 11-5 on Saturday. Dierckman hit a solo home run to left field in the second inning, singled in the fourth inning, and singled in the seventh inning.

Manchester got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Cam Bortone (South Bend, Ind,, Mishawaka Marian) singled down the left field line, Vian Mariani (South Bend, Ind., John Adams) grounded into a fielder's choice, and Beau Kaler (Elkhart, Ind., Jimtown) hit into a fielder's choice, each scoring one run.

The Black & Gold added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after Dierckman homered to left field, Max Horner doubled to center field, Joel Kennedy singled to center field, Mariani singled down the right field line, and Kaler singled down the left field line, each scoring one run.

A dropped third strike extended the Spartan lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the third inning.

Rocco Hanes (Ossian, Ind., Norwell) stepped on the bump first for Manchester Spartans. The starter surrendered nine hits and five runs (three earned) over nine innings, striking out 10 and walking one.

Manchester accumulated 17 hits in the game. Mariani and Dierckman each collected three hits for Spring 2025 Manchester Spartan. Mariani, Kaler, and Dierckman each drove in two runs for the Spartans. Bortone, Gavin Gleason, and Kennedy each collected multiple hits for Manchester.
