Baseball Splits on Sunday

Hanover, Ind. - The Manchester University Baseball team traveled on Sunday to play Hanover College in a Doubleheader.

The Spartans fell short in Game One but bounced back in Game Two to secure a split.

Game One Manchester 4, Hanover 5

Sunday's game one against Hanover Panthers was a heartbreaker for the Spartans, as they lost the lead late in a 5-4 defeat. The game was tied at four in the bottom of the eighth when Hanover singled, scoring one run.

Manchester lost despite out-hitting Hanover Panthers 10 to five. Michael Dierckman (Fort Wayne, Ind., Carroll) led the Spartans with two hits.

The Black & Gold got on the board in the top of the first inning after Cam Bortone (South Bend, Ind,, Mishawaka Marian) hit a sacrifice fly, Alex Westfield (Rockledge, FL, Viera) singled down the right field line, and Mitchell Cobb (Pendleton, Ind., Pendleton Heights) hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

Hanover captured the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the eighth after tagging up to score one, Hanover singled down the left field line, and center field, each scoring one run.

Quinton Black (Noblesville, Ind., Noblesville) took the loss for MU. The pitcher went one and one-third innings, surrendering three runs on zero hits, striking out one and walking three. Jared Holley (Wabash, Ind., Wabash) started on the hill for the Spartans. The pitcher allowed three hits and two runs over six innings, striking out five and walking five.

Manchester tallied 10 hits in the game. Bortone, Cobb, Gavin Gleason (Brookston, Ind., Delphi Community), and Westfield each drove in one run for the Spartans.


Game Two Manchester 3, Hanover 2

Both teams were strong on the hill on Sunday, but the Spartans defeated the Hanover Panthers 3-2. Jackson Todor (Fort Wayne, Ind., Homestead) started the game for Manchester and recorded 15 outs.

The Black & Gold didn't take the lead until later in the game. The game was tied at two in the top of the eighth when Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind., Monroe Central) singled, scoring one run.

Manchester were the first to get on the board in the first when Kennedy hit into a double play, but one run scored.

Hanover tied the game in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a single by #10, and a walk..

Todor stepped on the bump first for Manchester. The righty gave up four hits and two runs over five innings, striking out one and walking three. Jake McGrath (Fort Wayne, Ind., Carroll) and Brett Wathen (Ossian, Ind., Norwell) each threw shutout innings for the Spartans in relief.

Kennedy went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Manchester in hits.
