Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Spartans Softball team traveled to Michigan on Tuesday to take on the Kalamazoo Hornets in a non-HCAC match up.
The Spartans fell in game 1 but bounced back big in game 2 to split the series and improve to 9-5 overall.
Game 1
Manchester1, KZOO 4
Manchester University fell to Kalamazoo College 4-1 on Tuesday. Kalamazoo College got on the board in the second inning after #2 singled, scoring one run.
Lizzy Willis (Yorktown, Ind., Yorktown) scored after tagging up, which helped the Spartans tie the game at one in the top of the third. A single by #4 gave Kalamazoo College the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the third.
Willis took the loss for Manchester University. The starting pitcher went six innings, surrendering four runs on 11 hits, striking out two and walking two.
Erin Singleton (Brownstown, Ind., Brownstown Central),
Lexi Goodman (Poplar, Ill., North Boone), Willis, and
Kendal Rider (Otterbein, Ind., Lafayette Central Catholic) each collected one hit for Manchester University. Rider led Manchester University with one run batted in. The outfielder went 1-for-4 on the day.
Game 2
Manchester 11, KZOO 6
Kendal Rider collected four hits in five at bats, as Manchester University defeated Kalamazoo College 11-6 on Tuesday. Rider doubled in the third inning, doubled in the first inning, singled in the fifth inning, and singled in the seventh inning.
The Spartans got on the board in the top of the first inning after
Crystal Cooke (Richmond, Ky., Madison Southern) grounded into a fielder's choice, and
Erin Singleton singled down the right field line, each scoring one run.
Kalamazoo College took the lead in the bottom of the second. An error scored two runs, to give Kalamazoo College the lead, 3-2.
Manchester University took the lead in the top of the third inning after Singleton singled to center field,
Alee Eaker (Lowell, Ind., Lowell) singled to center field,
Molly Gilhooly (Mount Prospect, Ill., Prospect) doubled down the left field line,
Lizzy Willis singled down the left field line, Rider doubled down the left field line, Kalamazoo College committed an error,
Sabrina Leonard (Fillmore, Ind., South Putnam) singled down the left field line, and
Lexi Goodman scored after tagging up, each scoring one run.
Kalamazoo College scored one run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run to center field by #24.
Kaitlyn Carr (Valparaiso, Ind., Chesterton) earned the win for Manchester University. The pitcher allowed 13 hits and six runs (four earned) over seven innings, striking out two and walking none.Â
The Black & Gold amassed 12 hits in the game. Singleton led Manchester University with two runs batted in. The shortstop went 2-for-4 on the day. Leonard and Willis each collected multiple hits for Manchester University. Manchester University had a strong eye at the plate, tallying four walks for the game. Manchester University stole five bases in the game. Manchester University turned one double play in the game.
