Lexington, KY. - The Manchester University Spartan Softball team finished up their season in the HCAC Tournament hosted by Transylvania this past weekend.
Game One Manchester 0, Franklin 4
The Spartans came into the Tournament as the #5 seed where they would have an early morning match up to open up play against Franklin College who was the #4 seed. The Spartans split with the Grizzlies early on in the season however Franklins pitching dominated the game and sealed the victory for Franklin.
Kaitlyn Carr (Valparaiso, Ind., Chesterton) picked up her first loss of the season after a 9-0 start to the year.
Erin Singleton (Brownstown, Ind., Brownstown Central) lead the Spartans in hits, going 2-3 in the game as the lead off hitter.
Game Two Manchester 3, Earlham 4 (9 Inn.)
Game Two saw the Spartans taking on the Quakers in another morning match up, this time against the #3 seed. Earlham got things started early with two runs scored in the first but Manchester fought right back to score two of their own after a
Crystal Cooke (Richmond, Ky., Madison Southern) single and a
Lizzy Willis (Yorktown, Ind., Yorktown) single that would tie it up in the 5th. Earlham scored one in the 6th to take the lead back but in the top of the 7th with two outs,
Kendal Rider (Otterbein, Ind., Lafayette Central Catholic) singled and then stole second to add onto her stolen base record and get put into scoring position.
Lizzy Willis stepped up tp the plate a barreled a ball down the line and Rider scored to tie the game.
After a couple of extra innings, Earlham would get a runner on in the bottom of the 9th and hit a double to secure the victory.
The Spartan Softball team finished their season with a record of 21-17 overall and 10-10 in HCAC play and reached the HCAC Tournament for the third season in a row.
