Kokomo, Ind. - Manchester Baseball traveled to Championship Park in Kokomo to take on DePauw this weekend. The three-game series was originally scheduled to be played at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis, however, due to field conditions the games were relocated.
Manchester fell to DePauw 11–7 on Saturday afternoon. Despite a strong offensive effort and a late push from the Spartans, an early five-run inning by the Tigers proved to be the difference.
DePauw struck quickly in the opening frame, using six hits to plate five runs and take an early advantage. A two-run rally was capped by a three-run home run to right center that put the Tigers in front 5–0 before Manchester could record the final out of the inning. The Spartans responded in the second inning. Center fielder Michael Dierckman tripled to right center and later came around to score on a passed ball, putting Manchester on the board and trimming the deficit to four. Manchester added two more runs in the fifth. Owen Ritchie and Beau Kaler worked back-to-back walks before Max Horner delivered an RBI double to center field. Later in the inning, Evann Schmidtendorff lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Kaler and cut the Tigers' lead to 5–3.
On the mound, Ty Layson settled in after the opening inning and delivered a strong outing for the Spartans. The right-hander worked seven innings, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out two and keeping DePauw off the board for much of the middle innings. DePauw, however, added insurance late. A four-run eighth inning extended the Tigers' lead before Manchester answered in the bottom half. The Spartans rallied for four runs in the frame to pull within striking distance, highlighted by continued offensive production from Horner and timely baserunning that brought the score to 9–7. The Tigers responded with two more runs in the ninth to seal the game.
Horner led the Manchester offense with a standout performance, going 5-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and four RBI. Donavin Massing added two hits and reached base three times, while Dierckman contributed a triple and scored a run. Cam Bortone chipped in with a double and reached base twice. Manchester finished the game with 10 hits and drew five walks, but DePauw's 14-hit attack and early offensive surge proved enough to secure the win.
Game Two:
Manchester rallied late and held off DePauw for a 10-9 win on Sunday, using a pair of four-run innings and some clutch bullpen work to earn the victory.
The Spartans struck first in the top of the second. After Michael Dierckman opened the frame with a single and later moved into scoring position, Owen Ritchie and Beau Kaler were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Max Horner then delivered the biggest swing of the day, blasting a grand slam to left-center to give Manchester a 4-0 lead. DePauw answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, but Manchester came right back in the third. Cam Bortone was hit by a pitch, Dierckman drew a walk, and both runners moved up on a double steal before Alex Westfield lined a two-run single to right to push the advantage to 6-3.
Jackson Todor gave Manchester a solid start on the mound, working five innings and allowing three runs, two earned, while scattering four hits. He helped the Spartans maintain the lead through the middle innings as DePauw was held scoreless in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth. The game tightened in the seventh when DePauw strung together three runs to even the score at 6-6, but Manchester had another response ready in the eighth. Dierckman led off with a double, and after a sacrifice bunt by Westfield, Collin Bailey came through with a pinch-hit bunt single. Kaler followed with a two-run single up the middle, then Evann Schmidtendorff added a two-run double down the left-field line to give the Spartans a 10-6 cushion. DePauw made one last push in the bottom of the eighth with three runs, cutting the deficit to one, but Manchester shut the door from there. Freshman Luke Diebold came on in relief and earned the save, recording the final five outs. He struck out two and worked out of a tense ninth inning after DePauw put the tying and go-ahead runners on base.
At the plate, Manchester finished with 11 hits. Horner paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored. Dierckman also had a big day, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs scored. Westfield went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Schmidtendorff drove in two with a key late double. B. Kaler added two RBI and scored twice.
Game Three:
Manchester put together another strong day at the plate Sunday, piling up 13 hits, but DePauw answered with timely power and a late three-run eighth to hand the Spartans a 10-6 loss in the second game of the doubleheader in Kokomo.
The Spartans scored in five different innings and stayed within striking distance throughout the afternoon. Manchester opened the scoring in the second when Michael Dierckman doubled and came home on an RBI single from Donavin Massing. DePauw answered with a two-run homer in the bottom half, but the Spartans continued to chip away. Manchester tied things again in the fourth. Joel Kennedy singled, Dierckman added a bunt single, and Massing delivered once more with a ground-rule RBI double to score Kennedy and make it 2-2. The Spartans grabbed their biggest push in the fifth, stringing together key hits to reclaim the lead. Owen Ritchie drew a walk before Max Horner laced an RBI double to left center. Two batters later, Kennedy came through with an RBI double of his own, giving Manchester a 4-3 advantage.
After DePauw surged back in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer, Manchester again responded in the sixth. Dierckman singled to start the inning, moved up on a wild pitch, and later scored when Ritchie reached on a bunt that brought home a run, trimming the deficit to 6-5. Kennedy led the Spartan offense with a 3-for-5 performance that included a double, a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. Dierckman also went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs scored, a walk, and two stolen bases, while Massing finished 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI. Horner added two hits, including an RBI double, as Manchester totaled four doubles and a homer. The Spartans had a chance to break through in the eighth after loading the bases with two outs, but DePauw escaped the jam and preserved its lead. The Tigers then took control in the bottom half, scoring three times to stretch the margin to 10-5. Kennedy gave Manchester one more spark in the ninth with a solo homer to left, but the Spartans could get no closer.
Jake McGrath went the first six innings on the mound for Manchester, allowing six runs, five earned, while striking out one. The Spartan bullpen worked through the final two frames, but DePauw capitalized late to seal the win. Despite the result, Manchester showed plenty of life offensively, with multiple-hit games from Kennedy, Dierckman, and Massing and six runs on 13 hits in the finale.
