North Manchester, Ind. - Manchester split a conference doubleheader with Hanover on Tuesday afternoon at Gratz Field, highlighted by an 8–4 victory in game one that marked a milestone moment for Head Coach Rick Espeset, who captured the 700th win of his career.
Manchester wasted little time taking control in the opener, erupting for eight runs in the first two innings and riding that early surge to the decisive game-one victory. The Spartans set the tone immediately in the opening frame. After a hit and an error put runners on base, Donavin Massing delivered the big blow, launching a three-run homer to left-center to give Manchester an early advantage. The inning didn't stop there, as Evann Schmidtendorff followed with a solo home run, capping a four-run first and swinging momentum squarely to the home side.
Manchester struck again in the second inning. Max Horner drew a leadoff walk before Joel Kennedy crushed a two-run homer to center field. Later in the frame, Schmidtendorff continued his big afternoon, ripping a two-run double down the left-field line to give the Spartans an 8–1 cushion through two innings.
From there, Manchester pitching and defense took over. Jake McGrath earned the win on the mound, working six innings while allowing three runs on two hits and striking out seven, consistently stranding Hanover runners when needed. The Spartans finished with 10 strikeouts as a staff and limited the Panthers to just three hits. Reliever Quinton Black closed the door down the stretch, tossing three innings of relief and allowing only one run to secure the victory.
Offensively, Manchester finished with seven hits but made them count. Schmidtendorff led the way with two hits and three RBIs, while Massing added three RBIs on his first-inning blast. Kennedy drove in two runs and scored twice, and Horner crossed the plate two times from the leadoff spot.
Manchester continued to battle in game two, totaling 14 hits and staying within striking distance through the middle innings, but a big seventh inning by Hanover proved decisive in a 14–7 loss. After falling behind early, the Spartans answered in the first inning as Horner came around to score, trimming the deficit to 2–1.
Manchester tied the game in the fourth inning when Collin Bailey doubled and later scored on a double play, and the Spartans grabbed momentum in the fifth by stringing together four hits. RBI singles from Kennedy and Alex Westfield gave Manchester its first lead of the game at 4–2.
Hanover answered with a run in the sixth, but Manchester responded again in the bottom half. Back-to-back singles from Matthew Subler and Beau Kaler set the stage before Horner ripped an RBI double, and another run came home on a wild pitch to put the Spartans back in front, 6–5.
The turning point came in the seventh, when Hanover capitalized on free passes and timely hits to score five runs and regain control. Manchester continued to battle offensively, adding a run in the seventh when Owen Ritchie scored on a wild pitch and putting runners on base late, but Hanover added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth to seal the outcome.
Horner led Manchester in the nightcap, finishing 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. Kennedy added two hits and drove in a run, while Massing also recorded two hits and an RBI. Bailey contributed a double, and the Spartans finished game two with four doubles as a team.
On the mound, Axel Cummings worked 6.1 innings and struck out five, keeping Manchester in the game through the sixth inning. The Spartans' staff combined for 11 strikeouts, though walks and wild pitches factored into several Hanover scoring rallies.
Across the doubleheader, Manchester totaled more than 20 hits and showed consistent offensive production, pairing a milestone victory for Coach Espeset with a hard-fought effort in the nightcap.
