Softball Splits With Franklin on Senior Day

North Manchester, Ind. - The Manchester softball team earned a split with HCAC-leading Franklin on Friday afternoon at the MU Softball Field, dropping a tightly contested opener before rallying late to claim a dramatic walk-off victory in the nightcap.

Manchester went toe-to-toe with conference power Franklin in the opener but came up just short in a 2–1 decision.

The Spartans struck first in the bottom of the second inning. After drawing a leadoff walk, Manchester manufactured the game's opening run when the runner moved up on a sacrifice and eventually scored on a two-out RBI single to left-center, giving MU an early 1–0 advantage.

Franklin answered in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of runs to take a 2–1 lead. Manchester limited further damage and kept the game within reach thanks to strong pitching and steady defense, holding the Grizzlies scoreless over the final three frames.

Manchester put pressure on Franklin throughout the afternoon, finishing with five hits and bringing the tying run to scoring position multiple times, but the Spartans were unable to capitalize late as Franklin held on for the one-run win.

Manchester responded in emphatic fashion in the second game, erasing an early deficit and scoring four times in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun Franklin, 7–6.

The Spartans jumped out to a 2–0 lead in the second inning behind timely hitting and aggressive baserunning, but Franklin chipped away and eventually moved in front, scoring in five different innings to take a 6–3 lead into the final frame.

Facing a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh, Manchester mounted its decisive rally. The Spartans put runners on early in the inning and applied steady pressure with a combination of base hits and productive outs. With the tying run coming across during the rally, Manchester delivered the winning blow to walk it off and secure the comeback victory.

Manchester totaled 11 hits in the game and showed resilience throughout, matching one of the conference's top teams pitch for pitch before delivering in the game's biggest moment.
