BLACKSBURG, VA. – Manchester University coach Matt Burlingame continued to see improvement from his 2012-13 Spartans in the wake of a pair of losses to NCAA Division I opponents Campbell and Virginia Tech Sunday, Nov. 18.
"We did some good stuff," Burlingame said. "Freshman Kalib Jackson (Rome City, Ind.) wrestled well for just having been in the room for four days. Freshman Josh Juarez (South Bend, Ind.) wrestled well, too. They are both wrestling up a weight as well."
"I really liked the way the entire team competed against Virginia Tech," he added. "Everybody was moving, attacking and scrapping. We still need to work on some things. I think once guys get to the weights they should be at and some of our other starters are in the lineup, we should be stronger."
Against the Fighting Camels, MU narrowly missed picking up some team points in a 44-0 final. Juarez dropped a 5-2 battle at 141, senior Chad Ulmer (Bourbon, Ind.) fell in a close-knit 4-0 match at 184, and senior heavyweight Jimmie King (Muncie, Ind.) took his opponent to a 2-1 final. The No. 12-ranked Hokies, during a day in which they dropped just two matches in wins over MU and #25 Wisconsin, used bonus-point wins in each match against the Black and Gold to forge a 53-0 victory.
Manchester returns to the mat Saturday, Dec. 1, to compete at the 53rd Indiana Little State Collegiate Championships. The tournament is held at Nicoson Hall on the campus of the University of Indianapolis. MU's dual schedule resumes Friday, Dec. 7, when they travel to Ada, Ohio, to oppose National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III No. 10-ranked Ohio Northern University.
