WHEATON, ILL. – Despite an 0-3 dual finish for his Manchester University team at the Wheaton College of Illinois Duals Saturday, Jan. 19, Coach Matt Burlingame had many positives to draw on.
The Black and Gold took Concordia College of Wisconsin and the host Thunder to the wire in close-knit 24-16 and 30-21 losses to highlight the afternoon. MU led the Falcons of Concordia 10-8 before the opposition picked up five wins in the last six weights. The Spartans opened their final dual against Wheaton with a 21-0 roll over the first four weight classes but a rugged Wheaton line-up in the final six contests spelled the turnaround.
Freshman 133-pounder Kalib Jackson (Rome City, Ind.) reached the 10-win mark with three victories to move to 10-7 on the season. Fellow freshmen 141-pounder Josh Juarez (South Bend, Ind.) and 149-pounder Johnny Tullos (White Pigeon, Mich.) recorded 2-1 records.
"Kalib really looked great today," Burlingame said. "I was impressed too by Josh as, even in his loss to top-ranked Noah Fitzenreider of North Central, he didn't wrestle that bad. Johnny had a strong day, too, after having been out of practice for almost the entire week. I was also pleased about how (freshman 125-pounder Taylor Hart of Granger, Ind.) did. He finished 1-2, but he battled Nick Santos of North Central, who is pretty strong, to the end in a 6-5 loss."
Manchester opened its day with a 30-9 loss to North Central of Illinois. Tullos, Jackson and senior 174-pounder Kurt Monix (Crown Point, Ind.) all earned decisions against the Cardinals.
A busy four-dual week opens Tuesday, Jan. 22, for MU. The Black and Gold host National Wrestling Coaches Association No. 7-ranked Olivet College of Michigan in a 7:30 p.m. dual at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
