NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Individual victories from senior 174-pounder Kurt Monix (Crown Point, Ind.) and junior heavyweight Jason Pedigo (Zionsville, Ind.) spotlighted Manchester University's home-opening dual against No. 16-ranked Olivet Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Monix, moving to 5-3 on the season, used an early first period takedown and a quick reversal off the second period whistle to forge a 4-1 lead on Olivet's Connor Sharp. The Spartans' veteran managed a 5-3 win, holding off some late shot attempts from his Comet opponent.
Pedigo gained his fifth win of the year with a fall over Anthony Giordano in 6:12. He got out of the quick with a pair of first period nearfalls and continued to the build the lead until finally getting his opponent turned flat in the third period.
Olivet scored victories in the remaining eight matches for a 32-9 victory. However, the final team score could have been much closer.
The trio of freshman 141-pounder Josh Juarez (South Bend, Ind.), freshman 149-pounder Johnny Tullos (White Pigeon, Mich.), and senior 157-pounder Chuck Holmquest (Plymouth, Ind.) all lost nip-and-tuck matches. Juarez fell 4-1 to Jeremy Ward, while Tullos put Olivet's Justin Holm to his back midway through the second period but couldn't hold in a 7-5 loss. Holmquest and the Comets' Kyle Witgen traded a takedown and escape each but a riding point for Witgen was the difference in a 4-3 final.
Manchester University (0-8) resumes its dual schedule with four match-ups at the UW-Whitewater Border Brawls Saturday, Jan. 26. The Spartans will take on Lincoln Community College, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point during the meet which begins at 12 p.m. EST.
NOTES: Freshman 133-pounder Kalib Jackson (Rome City, Ind.) had his five-match win streak snapped. He remains the team wins leader with 10. … MU doesn't return home until its Senior Night battle with Mt. St. Joseph Feb. 21.
