WHITEWATER, WIS. – Fueled by a major decision from 157-pounder Chuck Holmquest (Plymouth, Ind.) and a pin from senior 174-pounder Kurt Monix (Crown Point, Ind.), Manchester University topped UW-Eau Claire 28-24 to highlight their day at the UW-Whitewater Border Brawls Saturday, Jan. 26.
Holmquest's 9-0 victory over UW-EC's Brandon Stradel was his 10th of the year, making him the second Spartan grappler to reach 10-or-more wins. Monix, as part of a 3-1 day in which he improved his season record to 8-4 on the season, picked up a big fall for MU in 1:04 over Matt Koch. The remaining points against the Blugolds came from forfeit wins for freshman 125-pounder Taylor Hart (Granger, Ind.), sophomore 133-pounder Kalib Jackson (Rome City, Ind.) and junior heavyweight Jason Pedigo (Zionsville, Ind.).
Coach Matt Burlingame's squad fell 35-15 to Lincoln Community College, 37-6 to the host and No. 11-ranked Warhawks and 42-5 to No. 13-ranked UW-Stevens Point in their other three duals.
MU returns to the mat for Wheaton College's Pete Willson Invitational Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1 and 2.
NOTES: Hart joined Monix atop the win percentage list for Manchester University during the day with a 3-1 record. Holmquest ended 2-2. … The Spartans (1-11) return to dual action Thursday, Feb. 7, with an in-state clash at Wabash. … Jackson and Holmquest stand atop the season wins' category with 11 each through the Border Brawls.
