NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Claiming five key match wins of four points or less, Ohio Northern earned a 37-6 win over Manchester University Thursday, Jan. 16.
Despite falling to 2-7, the Spartans gave their home crowd at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena reasons to be positive. Sophomore heavyweight Dustin Kult (West Lafayette, Ind.), whose late tournament run at the 2014 Spartan Mat Classic had fans buzzing, gave highly-touted Polar Bear heavyweight Cody Lovejoy, entering with a 17-1 record, all he could handle. An early third period escape was the difference but Kult had a strong double in he couldn't finish for the takedown as the clock expired. Sophomore 133-pounder Kalib Jackson (Angola, Ind.) rallied back from a 4-1 first period deficit to tie Cole Cochran late in the first. However Cochran answered with a two-point nearfall early in the second frame en route to a 7-5 win. Sophomore 141-pounder Josh Juarez (South Bend, Ind.) put together back-to-back takedowns late against Ryan Fowler in an 8-4 loss; freshman 157-pounder Collin Wise (Cairo, Ohio) dropped a 6-3 decision to Kyle Brezovec in a match that was scoreless through the first three minutes; and freshman 165-pounder Dylan Lauffer (Fairfield, Ohio) narrowly missed getting his 10th victory. Lauffer had an early takedown against Colt Lovejoy but couldn't get away from his under position in the second. Lovejoy got around on a reversal early in the third and hung on for the 4-2 win.
MU continues dual competition Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Wheaton College of Illinois Duals. They will face off against the University of Dubuque, the host Thunder and Maranatha Baptist Bible College. Action begins at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in WC's King Arena.
NOTES: Freshman 125-pounder Alan Mock (Peru, Ind.) accounted for the team's six points with a forfeit victory. It moved to 6-11 on the season … Manchester University returns to SWA for its home finale Tuesday, Jan. 21, against in-state rival Trine University.
