Spartan Shorts: A pin and a decision were part of a solid 2-1 day for freshman heavyweight Seth Meyer (West Lafayette, Ind.) that highlighted the Olivet Comet Duals Nov. 21. He helped the Spartans avoid a shutout against Olivet College in the squad's opening match-up and then came back with a victory to close a narrow 26-18 loss to Grand Valley State University. Other individual victories for Coach Kevin Lake's squad came from sophomore 125-pounder Blake Denton (Monticello, Ind.), who turned in the team points against Adrian College with a decision, and sophomore 133-pounder Ruben Rodriguez, Jr. (Hammond, Ind.); sophomore 141-pounder Chase Wilson (Peru, Ind.); and sophomore 157-pounder Alex Arney (Fort Wayne, Ind.) to help stake the Spartans to a 15-7 lead through five weights against GVSU. The Lakers responded with two falls, a decision and a major decision in four straight matches to overturn the deficit … In other early season mat news, Arney was a runner-up, and the duo of freshman 157-pounder Richard Osha (Washington, Ind.) and Wilson claimed consolation championships at the Trine University Invitational Nov. 14. The Black and Gold posted 75 points to tie for fourth in the team race. Junior 165-pounder Dylan Lauffer (Fairfield, Ohio) has also been a consolation champion this season claiming the honor at UW-Platteville's Super 8 Invitational Nov. 7 … The clash with the Polar Bears starts a two-event schedule this week. MU's in the field for the 2015 Indiana Little State Championships Sunday, Dec. 6, at the University of Indianapolis.
On the Horizon: The Black and Gold conclude their pre-Christmas slate with a double dual at Indiana University against the Hoosiers and Eastern Michigan University Sunday, Dec. 13. Match times are 2:30 p.m. vs. the Hurons and 4 p.m. against IU inside University Gym on IU's campus.
