Box Score NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester University men's tennis team swung into action for the first time during the 2020-21 academic year on Tuesday afternoon. The Spartans hosted regional-foe Trine University at the MU Tennis Courts.
Trine topped the Spartans 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
In doubles action, the duo of Isaac Miller and Samuel Hollingsworth tested the top duo from Trine. Miller and Hollingsworth closed to within 6-5 before Aaron Streit and Ryan Smith earned a hard-fought 8-5 victory at no. 1 doubles.
At the no. 1 singles flight, Isaac Miller (Millersburg, Ind./Fairfield) dropped a highly competitive match to Trine's Isaac Everitt, 6-2, 6-4.
Sophomore Austin Arnold (Coatesville, Ind./South Putnam) won his first set at the no. 4 position, 6-4, against Trine's Ryan Smith. Smith battled for a 7-5 victory in the second set and the pair were gridlocked in a tiebreaker in the third set. An injury forced Arnold to retire in the third set.
Blake Rentschler (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) managed to win four games in the second set of his no. 5 singles matchup against Trine's Drew Dixon.
Trine improved to 2-2 on this fall.
The Spartans (0-1) will travel to Angola on Saturday, September 26, for a rematch with the Thunder. Match time is scheduled for 11 am.
