Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. – The Manchester University men's tennis team earned a thrilling victory over regional-foe Trine University on Saturday afternoon. Saturday's match marked the second meeting this week between the Spartans and the Thunder.
Manchester battled to a hard-fought 5-4 victory.
The Black & Gold earned one point in doubles action as the duo of Samuel Hollingsworth and Isaac Miller earned an 8-2 victory at the no. 1 position. Andrew Kibler and Austin Arnold won five games in their no. 2 doubles match before falling to Trine's Mitch Rose and Adam Dills by a final tally of 8-5. Blake Rentschler and Trevor Johnson pressed the Trine duo of Ben Toole and Ethan Wallace at the no. 3 flight, winning four games in a narrow 8-4 defeat.
Manchester made up ground in singles play on Saturday afternoon. Senior Isaac Miller (Millersburg, Ind./Fairfield) rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the no. 1 singles position.
Sophomore Austin Arnold (Coatesville, Ind./South Putnam) picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory at no. 4 singles. Junior Blake Rentschler (Griffith, Ind./Bishop Noll) also added a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at the no. 5 flight.
Junior Samuel Hollingsworth (New Castle, Ind./ Blue River Valley) narrowly knocked off James Hancock at the no. 2 singles position. Hancock outlasted Hollingsworth in a super tiebreaker 2-6, 6-1, 10-1.
Sophomore Reece Romer (LaGrange, Ind./Lakeland) provided the deciding point in Saturday's match. Romer outlasted Trine's Grant Houin in a super tiebreaker at no. 6 singles 5-7, 6-1, 10-8
Manchester improved to 1-1 during its shortened fall circuit. The Spartans will host Bethel (Ind.) on Tuesday, October 6, at the MU Tennis Courts beginning at 4 pm.
Trine dropped to 2-3 this fall. The Thunder will have a pair of matches remaining on their fall calendar.
