Spartans Defeat Bluffton in OT to Advance in HCAC Tournament

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Spartans opened up their HCAC Men's Soccer Tournament action on the road against 4th seeded Bluffton this past Saturday. The 5th seeded Spartans avenged their regular season loss to the Beavers as they eliminated Bluffton with a 0-1 scoreline. 

The winner could not be decided in the normal 90-minute period as the match would have to advance to overtime to find a winner. Manchester got on the board early in the added period as Cory Mitchell (Maitland, Fla., Winter Park) assisted Conner Shaffer (Peru, Ind., Peru) in the 92nd minute to score the lone goal of the match. The Spartans settled into a defensive shape to help defend the narrow lead for the next 18 minutes. The Beavers fired 6 shots in the overtime period, none of which were able to find the back of the net. 

Shaffer's first career goal could not have come at a better time as it was the game winner of the match to push the Spartans through to the next round. Manchester's defense earned the clean sheet behind Aaron Ketchmark (Kouts, Ind., Kouts) 6 save outing. 

The Black & Gold will continue on in the tournament to face the number 1 seed Rose-Hulman this week. The Wednesday match will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. in Terre Haute. The winner of the match will advance to the HCAC Men's Soccer Championship.
