Spartan Volleyball Kicks Off Season at Cedar Point Invitational

SANDUSKY, Ohio - The Spartan volleyball team traveled to Sandusky, Ohio for the weekend to compete at the Cedar Point Invitational.

The Spartans kicked off the season with a win against their first opponent of the weekend.  The victory was won in three sets vs Waynesburg University (Waynesburg, Pa). Carley Ripburger (Tipton, Ind/Tipton) led the Spartans with 27 assists, followed by
Emma Bault (Spencer, Ind., Owen Valley) with 14 digs. Halle Planck (Gas City, Ind., Mississinewa), Carley Camp (Logansport, Ind., Logansport), and Sara Shultz (Churubusco, Ind., East Noble) combined for 17 kills in the match.

Using the momentum from their first win of the season, the Spartan volleyball team faced the Thiel College Tomcats (Greenville, Pa) and remained undefeated on the day by winning the match 3-2.  Freshman,
Avery Ball (Decatur, Ind., Belmont), had a stellar performance with 16 digs, 14 kills, and 2 aces. Jessica Tarr (Fort Wayne, Ind., Snider) balanced the game with 38 assists, with Erika Kramer (Greensburg, Ind., North Decatur) adding 8 blocks. Shultz tallied 16 kills to lead the 2nd match. Manchester's blocking efforts outweighed the Tomcats 14-7, contributing to the win. Manchester volleyball ended the day 2-0.

Following the 2-0 record from the day before, Manchester lost their first match against Eastern Mennonite University (Harrisonburg, Va).  The Spartans went into 4 matches with the Lions, but came up short after an aggressive performance.
Rachael Ressler (Tipton, Ind., Tipton) received 6 of the teams' 9 aces. Helaina Walters (Marion, Ind., Eastbrook) added 9 digs and 2 assists with additional efforts made by Planck, who had 7 kills in the match.

To end the weekend invite, the Spartans faced Geneva College (Beaver Falls, Pa).  Seeking redemption, the Spartans came out on top in 5 sets, with great efforts made by both teams. Walters, Ball, and Ressler had great defensive performances with 55 of the 85 digs in the match. Avery Ball also chipped in 4 aces and 14 kills.

The Spartans ended the weekend going 3-1 in non-conference play.
