Spartans Turn in Strong Showing at the 2023 Spartan Mat Classic

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - Manchester wrestling was able to host its annual Spartan Mat Classic in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Saturday, January 14. Over a dozen teams travel to Manchester University to compete, including over 200 wrestlers.

The Spartans turned in a solid day of wrestling, finishing the classic with 29 team points and a 13th place finish.

Devontay Moore (Indianapolis, Ind., North Central) was the top finisher for the Spartans, placing fifth at 184 pounds and scoring 14 points for Manchester. In his opening bout, Moore won by decision over Blaine Kubasta (Indiana Tech) before winning by decision over Jack Cain (Baldwin Wallace) in round two. After falling to the consolation bracket, Moore won by fall over Zac Dabney (Ohio Northern) and won by decision over Will Stewart (Marian University (IN)). In the fifth-place match, Moore won by forfeit.

Victor Lee (Marion, Ind., Marion) finished the day in eighth place with 11 team points at 285 pounds. In consolation round two, Lee won by fall over Steven Flagg (Huntingdon College). Lee then won by fall over Liam Begley (Marian University (IN)) before winning by fall over Tarez Russell (Ohio Northern).

Landen Dilley (Warsaw, Ind., Wawasee High School) won by fall in his opening round at 141 pounds against Josh Gibson (Heidelberg University).

Keagen Mabie (Mishawaka, Ind., Mishawaka High School) won by fall over Zach Smith from Ohio Wesleyan University in his opening round at 149 pounds. Mabie also picked up a win by fall over Kliever Joseph (Defiance College) in the consolation bracket.

Ellisston Ross (Bloomington, Ind., Bloomington South) picked up two wins on the day. Ross won by decision over Tommy Brunty (Ohio Wesleyan University) in the consolation bracket. Ross also won by decision over Tyler Weseman (Lourdes University).

Robert Garrett (Gary, Ind., Calumet New Tech) picked up two wins on Saturday at 285 pounds. Garrett won by fall over Rigoberto Villa (Defiance College). Garrett also won by fall over Joe Shoup (Ohio Wesleyan University).

Up next, the Spartans will host the University of Chicago for a dual meet against the Maroons on Sunday, January 22. Event time is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Stauffer- Wolfe Arena.
